Nemesio Antunez was born in Santiago, Chile in 1918. He was an influential painter and engraver who founded Taller 99.
He studied architecture at the Universidad Católica de Chile, where he graduated in 1941. In 1956 he created Taller 99. In 1961, he served as director of the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Universidad de Chile.
The existence of Taller 99 revolutionized the perception of engraving recorded in Chile until that time, and facilitated the interest in etching among young artists. In 1956 Antúnez gets the “Critics Award”. In 1958, Taller 99, translocates to the offices of the Universidad Católica de Chile, where in the Bachelor of Arts the engraving speciality was created.
In 1961 he was appointed Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art at the Universidad de Chile where he created the Society of Friends of the Museum. In 1964 he was appointed cultural attaché in the United States, while he painted for the UN the mural “Heart of the Andes.” Together with Thiago de Mello, cultural attaché at the Brazilian Embassy in Chile, they will participate in the organization of four American Biennial of Engraving in Santiago, between 1964 and 1970.
He passed away in 1993.
